To cater to the educational needs of Children of transferable Central Government Employees including Defense and Para-Military personnel by providing a common programme of education.

To initiate and promote experimentation and innovations in education in collaboration with other bodies like the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) etc.

Kendriya Vidyalayas are run by the Kendriya' Vidyalaya Sangathan, an autonomous body formed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India as a result of recommendations of Second Pay Commission. They primarily cater to the educational needs of the children of Central Govt. Employees including Defence personnel State Govt. Employees and floating population. Needless to say, they have common syllabus and are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE), New Delhi.

Every School is miniature India in itself and tries to inculcate among students, the feeling of patriotism, brotherhood and national integration.

Places chosen for establishing Kendriya Vidyalayas are those having concentration of Defence personnel and other transferable Central Govt. Employees. For admission, Kendriya Vidyalayas give priority to the children of transferable Defence personnel, Central Govt. Employees and personnel of All India Services. But other floating population desirous of having such common pattern of education is also eligible for admission to the remaining seats. The instruction is imparted through the medium of Hindi and English in these Kendriya Vidyalayas, the ultimate objective being, to make pupils achieve a reasonable measure of proficiency in both the languages. Kendriya Vidyalayas prepare the pupils for All India Secondary School Examination and Senior School Certificate Examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE), New Delhi.

Kendriya Vidyalayas are being developed as quality Vidyalayas with some of the useful features of popular residential Vidyalayas, without making schooling very expensive. The quality of teaching is kept reasonable high by an appropriate Teacher-Pupil ratio and provision of a suitable proportion of Teachers with high qualification.

Kendriya Vidyalayas aim at having not only a common syllabus but also a well prepared syllabus along with good Text Books based on that syllabus. They are equipped with good Libraries, Laboratories and provide a variety of co-curricular activities.

Kendriya Vidyalayas provide studies in Humanities and Sciences and many of them offer diversified courses in Commerce, Computer and Information Technology.
